Trattorias and restaurants: our best addresses in Rome
In Rome, there are several types of establishments for dining, in addition to bakeries, those offering street food, and rosticcerie with takeaway dishes:
Trattorias: Family-run restaurants serving classic Roman dishes such as pasta cacio e pepe, amatriciana, or other local dishes. The atmosphere is friendly, with affordable prices (€10–20 per person). They are found throughout the city, especially in neighborhoods like Trastevere, Testaccio, or the Ghetto. Osterie are similar to trattorias, focusing on wine and simple dishes like cold cuts or cheese platters. Ideal for a light meal or an aperitivo. These places often offer a good-value “Menu del giorno” (daily menu).
Pizzerias: Specializing in pizza, they may serve Roman-style (thin and crispy crust) or Neapolitan-style (thicker crust) pizzas. Found all over the city. Average price ranges from €8 to €15 per person.
Restaurants: They offer a varied cuisine—Roman, Italian, or international—with a more formal service. Some, like Michelin-starred La Pergola, serve refined dishes such as gourmet risottos or elaborate desserts. Expect to pay €20–50 per person, more for fine dining. Many are located in the Pantheon area.
Other establishments: Rosticcerie (roast shops) offer takeaway or dine-in meals like roast chicken or suppli, while enoteche (wine bars) serve local wines with charcuterie or cheese boards.
The aperitivo is typically offered by bars, osterie, and wine bars from around 6 PM to 8 PM. Dinner in Rome usually takes place between 8 PM and 10 PM.
